Heller Ships 1/75 LaReale De France Sailing Ship Kit
The proposed Réale is a restoration of the Réale which dates from the end of the XVIIth century. The sculptures which decorate it can be attributed to Pierre Piget, the well-known sculptor. According to the historical documents used for this construction, the hull of this galley measured approximately 170 feet long and 21 feet wide. It had 31 paires of benches, one of which had been replaced on the port side with a kitchen. There were 7 men per bench, which indicates that there were at least 427 galley slaves. The Réale had two lateen sails, la Misaine and le petit Trinquet, for navigation. It would in fact be mistaken to believe that galleys navigated only bymeans of oars. The galley slaves were easily fatigued and the galleys navigated by sails during the journeys. Moreover, they travelled quite well using this means of propulsion. The oars were used during combat and manoeuvres.
