The Project 1204M Schmel-class armored patrol boat is a 75-ton surface combat vessel primarily designed for tactical inland and coastal operations rather than open-ocean assignments. Built for versatility, these boats excel in tasks like denying passage to enemy vessels, securing key ports, and facilitating the transport of cargo or troops along coastlines. With formidable weaponry, the Schmel-class can provide direct fire support for ground forces by attacking coastal targets.

A distinctive feature of the Schmel-class is its primary 76mm gun, originally conceived as an anti-tank weapon. This gun is also adept at firing high-explosive (HE) rounds, making it an effective option for engaging both armored and soft coastal targets. Supporting the main gun, the boat also mounts dual 25mm cannons, which are lethal against light vehicles, personnel, and small vessels caught in their crosshairs. Altogether, this armament package enables the Schmel-class to establish a dominant presence in riverine and coastal zones, supporting broader ground operations with naval firepower.

Produced from 1967 to 1974, approximately 118 of these boats were constructed during the Cold War. Despite their age, many Schmel-class boats remain operational today, maintaining a niche role within the modern Russian Navy’s fleet.

PRODUCT REVIEW

The Tiger Models 1/35 scale Project 1204M Schmel-class armored patrol boat kit is an impressive and highly detailed addition for naval model enthusiasts. When compared to the smaller CB-90 fast attack boat pictured on our website, the sheer size of the Schmel-class at 1/35 scale is immediately apparent, giving modelers a great sense of the boat’s formidable presence. The kit captures intricate details, from the rugged armored hull to the distinct weaponry, including the signature 76mm main gun and twin 25mm cannons. This model does a fantastic job showcasing the Schmel's imposing design and is a rewarding build for anyone interested in Cold War-era riverine patrol craft.
