Tamiya Model Ships 1/700 IJN I16/58 Submarine Waterline (2 Kits)
A submarine element was included as a supplement to the escort group for the Japanese Navy's historic attack on Pearl Harbor in WWII. Naval modelers can now recreate another part of the Pearl Harbor strike force with this re-packaged model kit.
About the I-16 & I-58
The Japanese Navy's daring plan for a surprise attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor called for the use of an Advanced Expeditionary Force made up of 20 fleet submarines. These were mainly to provide a screen and diminish the numbers of any U.S. Navy force that attempted to reach the Japanese carrier group. However, 5 of these fleet submarines, I-16, I-18, I-20, I-22, and I-24, also carried 2-man Ko-hyoteki midget submarines tasked with penetrating the harbor defenses to make torpedo attacks. These midget submarines were launched, but none ever returned from their missions.
