Launched on March 16, 1915, the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) was the lead ship in her “super-dreadnought” battleship class. When the Japanese made their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, Pennsylvania was in dry dock and it was one of the first ships to open fire on enemy dive bombers. It was strafed in the attack and suffered 15 KIA and 14 MIA. Later the battleship was to participate in the Aleutian, Saipan, Guam, and Leyte Gulf campaigns and was involved in more than its fair share of combat in the Pacific theater. At the end of its life, the USS Pennsylvania suffered the “ignominy” of becoming a target ship in nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946.
This kit portrays Pennsylvania as it appeared later in WWII, so many of the components (e.g. bridge, armaments, radar) are completely different to those used on the U.S.S. Arizona, which was sunk in the Pearl Harbor attack. The hull is molded as a single piece with an integral full deck. This innovative hull is a breakthrough and results in a much easier build for modelers. Apart from the impressive new hull, there is a plethora of newly tooled plastic and photo-etched parts to fit out and embellish this fine battleship model. This kit marks a step ahead in technological innovation, and is ready to slice through the waves!
