Dragon Model Ships 1/700 Sink the Bismarck: German Bismarck Battleship & RN Swordfish Aircraft 1941 Kit OS
One of the most famous battleships of WWII was the German Bismarck. At the time it was the largest battleship ever commissioned, with the 251m-long ship displacing 50,900 tons when fully loaded. Despite all her fame, the Bismarck only ever participated in one combat operation, and that lasted a brief 135 hours! During an attempt to break out into the Atlantic Ocean to ravage Allied shipping in May 1941, she was engaged in the Denmark Strait by the Royal Navy. In the battle this mighty German battleship sunk HMS Hood, the pride of the British fleet. However, it was Fairey Swordfish aircraft from HMS Ark Royal that humbled this warship two days later. Torpedoes dropped by these biplane aircraft jammed the Bismarck’s rudder and allowed British ships to engage her with their guns. On May 27, 1941 the Bismarck sank with the loss of 1,995 of her 2,200 crewmen.
